HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple’s default photo format since iOS 11. It stores the same image quality as a JPG at roughly half the file size — great for your camera roll, but many websites and apps still expect JPG or PNG and refuse to open HEIC. That’s why people search for a “HEIC to text” solution: they’ve photographed a document or sign on their iPhone and just want the words out, without a detour through a file-conversion tool.

No. Converting HEIC to JPG and then running OCR is an extra, unnecessary step — and re-saving as JPG can slightly degrade the image, which hurts recognition accuracy. Uploading the original HEIC keeps the photo at full quality, so you get the most accurate text. If you took the picture as a screenshot instead, that’s already a PNG and works the same way.
If you’d rather avoid HEIC altogether — for example because you share photos with apps that don’t support it — you can switch your iPhone back to the older, universally compatible JPG format:

HEIC stores more image detail per byte than JPG, which is genuinely helpful for OCR: the more faithfully the fine edges of each character are preserved, the more accurately the engine can recognise them. Problems usually creep in only when a HEIC is repeatedly re-saved or heavily compressed by a messaging app before it reaches you. Whenever possible, upload the original photo from your camera roll rather than a version that has been forwarded through chat, emailed, or screenshotted — each of those steps can soften the text and cost you a few characters of accuracy.
